Drone strike hits Kyiv’s Northern Bridge again, injuring two

The Oct. 4 strike came a day after another attack damaged the bridge’s road and trolleybus lines. The mayor said two people were hurt and a heating main was hit; a separate account from Ukraine’s president and independent reporting corroborate the repeat strike.

Executive summary

  • A second strike in two days: Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a Russian drone hit the roadway of the Northern Bridge on Oct. 4. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy separately said the bridge had been struck again. Independent reporting by the Kyiv Independent described this as the fourth consecutive day of Russian attacks on bridges across the Dnipro in Kyiv.[1][2][3]
  • Two people were injured: Klitschko said two people were hurt in the Oct. 4 strike: one was taken to hospital and the other treated at the scene. He also said the attack damaged a heating main, temporarily cutting hot water to part of the Desnianskyi district.[1][4][3][5]
  • The bridge campaign remains focused on transport links: The attacks have disrupted several Kyiv crossings over the Dnipro, but the extent of damage to the Northern Bridge and the duration of the latest service interruption remain unclear. The available reports do not establish that the bridge is structurally unusable.[3][5][6]

The Northern Bridge was struck again on the morning of Oct. 4, a day after a Russian attack damaged its roadway and the overhead wires used by trolleybuses. Klitschko said a drone hit the road surface and emergency services were sent to the site. Zelenskyy separately said the bridge had been hit again.[1][2][7][3]

The Kyiv Independent said the latest attack marked the fourth consecutive day that Russian forces targeted bridges across the Dnipro in the capital. Its report describes strikes on both the Northern and Southern bridges from Oct. 1 through Oct. 4. That repeated targeting has raised concerns about traffic, logistics and daily movement across the city, though the outlet’s cited aviation expert said destroying a bridge with the drones involved was unlikely.[3][6]

Klitschko said two people were injured in the Oct. 4 attack. One received medical help at the scene and the other was hospitalized, according to reporting by the Kyiv Independent and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The mayor also reported damage to a heating main, which temporarily left parts of the Desnianskyi district without hot water.[1][4][3][5]

The precise scale of structural damage and the time needed to restore normal bridge service were not yet clear in the reports reviewed. The city’s public statements describe the damage and immediate response, but do not establish that the crossing is unsafe or unusable.[1][3][5]

The Oct. 3 strike damaged the Northern Bridge’s roadway and trolleybus overhead contact network. Kyiv said traffic was temporarily restricted while crews responded. The new strike came before that transport disruption had been fully resolved, extending uncertainty for people and transit services that rely on the crossing.[7][8][9]

The broader campaign has affected multiple bridges that connect Kyiv’s eastern and western districts. The repeated attacks add pressure to a transport network serving a city of roughly three million people, but the reporting available so far does not show that any one strike has cut off either side of the capital.[3][6]
