Drone strikes hit Kyiv school and South Bridge, disrupting metro service

A drone struck a Solomianskyi district school while children were in a shelter, and two drones hit near supports of the separate South Bridge. Kyiv later reported no critical damage in an initial bridge inspection, restored bus routes and continued metro checks.

Executive summary

  • At the school: Kyiv's official timeline says a drone hit a school building in Solomianskyi district at 9:12 a.m. local time on Oct. 1, starting a fire while children were in a shelter. AP reported the warhead did not explode and described damage to the facade and windows; Reuters reported that footage it verified showed the drone striking the building's third floor. No injuries were reported at the school.[1][2][3]
  • At the bridge: Mayor Vitali Klitschko said two drones struck near supports of the separate South Bridge around 11:30 a.m. local time, suspending metro and surface transport across it. The city later said an initial inspection found no critical structural damage, restored buses 22 and 91, and kept metro trains on split sections while engineers inspected the bridge.[4][5][6][3]
  • What is not established: The reports document impacts, school damage and temporary transport disruption. They do not establish that the school or bridge was deliberately selected as a target, and the bridge assessment was preliminary when the city announced it.[1][4][2][3]

Kyiv's official attack log records a drone impact at a school building in the city's Solomianskyi district at 9:12 a.m. on Oct. 1. The notice said a fire had started and children were in the school's shelter. The Associated Press later reported that the drone's warhead did not explode, while Reuters reported that footage it verified showed a fireball after the drone struck the building's third floor.[1][2][3]

The school sustained visible damage. AP described a large hole in the brick facade, burn marks and shattered windows. Reuters reported that more than 100 students had been present, citing the school director, and said all pupils were in the shelter. No injuries at the school were reported in the accounts reviewed for this report.[2][3]

The available reporting establishes where the drone hit and what was damaged; it does not establish whether the school was the intended target. The city log describes an impact during a wider drone attack, and neither it nor the two reports provides evidence of the operator's specific target selection.[1][2][3]

Later that morning, two drones struck near support structures of the South Bridge, Mayor Vitali Klitschko said. The bridge carries the Green Line metro between the city's east and west banks as well as road traffic. Kyiv suspended metro and surface transport across it while municipal engineers assessed the structure; Reuters also reported the temporary interruption.[4][3]

In its 2 p.m. local update, the city said engineers had found no critical damage in a preliminary inspection of the bridge structure. Buses 22 and 91 returned to their normal routes, but inspection of the metro structures continued and trains remained limited to the underground sections of the Green Line. That distinction matters: the preliminary road-bridge assessment did not mean that metro service across the bridge had resumed.[5][6]

The disruption shows how an attack can affect civilian movement even when an initial structural review finds no critical damage. The city described that review as preliminary and said further checks were under way; its latest update located for this report did not announce the metro's return to normal service.[5][6]

The school and bridge incidents occurred at different locations and times. The school strike put children in a shelter as a building burned; the bridge strikes temporarily interrupted a major transit link. City transport notices later narrowed the disruption as buses resumed, while rail checks continued. Treating the two incidents as one impact or describing the bridge as fully cleared would overstate what the records say.[1][4][6]

Kyiv's chronology and transport updates are primary municipal records. AP and Reuters independently reported damage at the school and the bridge disruption, adding on-scene reporting and, in Reuters' account, verified video. The record supports a report of the impacts and their immediate consequences; responsibility for choosing either site as a target remains unproven in the evidence cited here.[1][4][2][3]
